With the symbol °C, it is a measure for temperature on a scale that took as a reference the freezing point of water at 100 °C and the boiling point at 0 °C, but later the values were reversed. It was created by Swedish physicist Anders Celsius. See Fahrenheit degree.

Celsius: centigrade. Andrés-: astronomer Swiss ( 1701-1744 ) who took participation in the measurement of the arc of the Meridian. And in the year 1742 devised a thermometer with a centesimal precisions scale - from 0 to 100 degrees - that allows to know the temperature of a cubic centimeter of distilled water at 0 meters above the level of the sea, equal to 0 degrees Celsius, reason by which degrees Celsius was called.
